Looking up a stock
The most basic funtion on whalewisdom is a stock lookup.  In this case we’ve looked up Lehman Brothers (LEH) and sorted by the Sh. - Qtr 2 column.  So this tells us as of the 6/30/08 filing who owned the most shares.  All the columns can be clicked to sort.
Of course, these hedge and mutual funds could have sold out of these positions before the collapse, but in many cases more long-term oriented funds will hold positions for quarters or even years.
Using 13Fs in this very basic way can give you an idea of who might be hurting from a decline or benefiting from a run-up.  It should also be a step in your investment process before buying an individual equity.
This type of lookup answers the question, “Among the big guys, who may still be holders, indicating who may still be a believer.”
